Subaru has announced pricing for its 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid, a new model added to its very popular XV Crosstrek compact crossover.
The company’s first production hybrid will have a base price of $25,995, plus an $825 destination charge, to bring the total to $26,820.
The base XV Crosstrek Hybrid carries a $4,000 premium over the cheapest non-hybrid Crosstrek.
Subaru will also offer an upscale Touring model, which adds a touchscreen navigation system, leather-trimmed steering wheel, and power moonroof for a sticker price of $30,120.
Subaru unveiled the XV Crosstrek Hybrid at the New York Auto Show earlier this year.
The powertrain consists of Subaru’s familiar 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine, an electric motor integrated with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and a small 1.4-kilowatt-hour nickel-metal-hydride battery pack.
The gasoline engine develops 148 horsepower, and the electric motor adds 13 hp. Subaru hasn’t releases a total system output figure, though.
The car maker projects an EPA fuel economy rating of 31 mpg combined (28 mpg city, 34 mpg highway), but final numbers have not yet been released.
Thanks to its mild hybrid design, the XV Crosstrek Hybrid most likely won’t be able to drive on electricity for any appreciable distance. Instead, the electric motor will add torque to the engine output to be used when pulling away from stops and for an extra boost of power in certain situations.
Nonetheless, the XV Crosstrek Hybrid may prove to be very popular.
Soon after the car’s unveiling, Subaru was swamped by demand, receiving 5,850 orders in Japan in just two weeks–more than 10 times the monthly sales target of 550 units.
The non-hybrid Crosstrek is also quite popular in the U.S.; the hybrid model will offer buyers of this stereotypically socially-conscious brand an even greener option.
The 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid will go on sale later this year.
