The BMW i3 electric car enters its second model year largely unchanged, with a few added features and a price hike to boot.
The 2015 BMW i3 now comes standard with DC fast-charging capability, satellite radio, and heated front seats–for a starting price that’s $1,075  higher than the 2014 model.

Prices start at $42,400 for a base i3, compared to $41,350 for 2014. BMW also raised the destination charge $25–to $950–for a total price of $43,350.
The price increase also applies to the range-extended i3 REx model, which starts at $47,200–compared to $46,125 for the 2014 model.

There are no mechanical changes, meaning all i3 models still use an electric motor with 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, powered by a 22-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack.
The i3 REx adds a 34-hp, 650-cc two-cylinder gasoline engine boosting range to 150 miles, compared 81 miles for the electric-only version.

That version is rated at 124 MPGe combined, which is the highest efficiency rating of any vehicle–gasoline, diesel, hybrid, or all-electric–currently sold in the U.S.
Meanwhile, the range-extended i3 REx is rated at 117 MPGe, or 39 mpg combined when running on gasoline power.

DC fast charging was a $700 option on 2014 models, and uses the Combined Charging Standard (CCS) protocol.
Discussing then-unconfirmed 2015-model-year updates last fall, executives said there are now enough CCS public charging stations to justify making the feature standard.

The change comes as BMW–along with fellow CCS adherent Volkswagen and network operator ChargePoint–embarks on a project to expand the CCS infrastructure.
The companies will partner to build 100 fast-charging sites along heavily-traveled corridors on the East and West Coasts this year. Construction of the first site is already underway in San Diego.
