Norway is known for its love of electric cars, but there’s one Norwegian who loves them more than most.
A recent Tesla Motors blog post tells the story of a “superowner” in the Scandinavian who not only has a Model S, but also six Roadster sports cars–apparently more Tesla electric cars than any other person on the planet.
Jens Kratholm is an opthalmologist living in the town of Narvik, located 136 miles north of the Arctic Circle–a place that’s noteworthy in itself
There have been claims that cold weather affects electric-car battery packs, reducing range. One such claim by New York Times journalist John Broder led to a very public feud between the paper and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
Tesla Model SYet Kratholm–given the appropriate nickname “Tesla Jens” by his neighbors–operates a Tesla fleet in an area that experiences average temperatures of 39 degrees Fahrenheit.
Kratholm ordered his first Roadster sight unseen from a dealer in Denmark in 2010. It replaced a Volkswagen minivan.
Driving a two-seat, rear-wheel drive sports car in an Arctic environment seemed to be less of an issue than convincing his wife–Ellen Røsnes–that the battery-electric Roadster could perform as well as the Mercedes-Benz models she admired.
In the post, Kratholm describes a 124-mile Model S journey from his home to an ice hotel in Sweden, during which temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Fahrenheit.
That’s cold enough to freeze diesel fuel and prevent trains from running, he said, but not enough to stop the Tesla electric car.
Now, Kratholm is planning to buy an eighth Tesla–a Model X crossover.
Tesla obviously can’t expect every customer to be as enthusiastic as Kratholm, and it remains a fact of physics that electric-car range will diminish in cold weather.
Nonetheless, that apparently isn’t an issue for this committed electric-car owner, who proves that with a bit of planning, you can use electric cars under some very unusual circumstances.
