Ford decided to get into the electric car game six months ago, being pushed into it by the wave of enthusiasm from the Chevy Volt and other concepts. They called the plan Project M.
On Sunday the vehicle will be demonstrated in the body of a Ford Focus compact car. Powered by lithium-ion batteries the car is expected to have a 100 mile driving range on a 6 hour charge.
There will be no range-extender like the Chevy Volt has.
Ford intends to produce the car in limited numbers in 2011, with initial production quantities at 10,000 units.
William Ford Jr, the company’s executive chairman said of Ford building an electric car “frankly, I think it’s a gamble not to do it, it’s clear that society is headed down this road.”
The production version of the car will have a more distinctive design.
