According to GM’s product development chief, the company is on track to release a plug-in SUV by 2011.
There has been some doubt surrounding GM’s future in regards to plug-in vehicles since the company announced bankruptcy and sold off the Saturn brand that was expected to be the first brand to get a plug-in for the company, but the confirmation from GM should dismiss any concerns.
According to GM Vice Chairman Tom Stephens, “I can tell you that I won’t lose one day in terms of customers being able to walk into dealerships and actually purchase a plug-in.”
At this time there is no confirmation regarding what model or brand will receive plug-in capability in the SUV category within GM, but several source hinted that Buick may be the front runner.
GM has also hinted at their interest in developing an electric city car.  As Tom Stephens said, “I think there’s pent up demand for the technology.  My job is to get it out there and get it right the first time but then get it cost effective so that we can do a huge number.”
GM has release their plan to turn around the ailing company.  They plan to introduce 14 vehicles with advanced technology including hybrids and EREVs within the next 3 years.  The plug-in SUV is but one on the list of many to come.
