Honda and Acura can’t resist teasing us with its latest hybrid sports car, the NSX.
We’ve seen concepts and disguised production models, and now there’s a race car ready to hit the circuit, aimed at Japan’s premier GT racing series.
The Honda NSX Concept-GT is designed to comply with GT500 regulations as part of the 2014 Super GT Series in Japan. It’ll make its race debut this year though, at the famous Suzuka race circuit.
GT500 cars currently run 3.4-liter V-8 engines, but Honda’s latest entry–replacing the existing HSV-010 GT racer–is a little different.
That’s because it uses a mid-mounted direct-injection 4-cylinder turbocharged unit, equipped with what Honda is calling a “racing hybrid system”. It’s unclear just how this system works at the moment, as the company has released no further details, but it may well be different to the road car’s setup–not least because the road car uses a different V-6 powerplant.
Hybrids, and indeed Honda hybrids, are no stranger to the Super GT racing series.
Honda showed a hybrid GT300 challenger last year, based (very, very loosely) on the road-going CR-Z sports hatchback, while Toyota unveiled its own hybrid GT300 challenger in the shape of a Prius.
We’re not sure whether the “win on Sunday, sell on Monday” mantra works with hybrid vehicles–but there’s no harm in giving it a try, right?
