 Johnson Controls, Inc. announced today that it is has received a 299 million dollar grant from the Department of  Energy to build domestic manufacturing capacity for batteries designed to power hybrid and electric vehicles. This money represents approximately half of the company’s total planned investment of 600 Million dollars in advanced battery manufacturing infrastructure.
Alex Molinaroli, president of Power Solutions for the company said “We have assembled a world-class team of suppliers and automotive manufacturers, and believe this comprehensive approach will enable the United States to establish a domestic industry that is competitive, economically viable and sustainable.”
With headquarters in Milwaukee, Johnson controls has more than 1,300 facilities scattered worldwide.  In April the company (with joint venture partner Saft) was awarded 148.5 Million dollars from the state of Michigan for the establishment of a Lithium Ion battery plant in Holland, Michigan.  This facility will produce batteries and complete assemblies for companies such as Ford, Azure Dynamics, Daimler AG and BMW.
