Land Rover, a name synonymous with fully capable off-road vehicles, is scheduled to release its first hybrid vehicle in 2011.
The hybrid, based on the LRX concept shown at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, will make its official debut on June 17th of next year with production beginning in early 2011.
According to Autocar UK, the LRX Hybrid is based on the underpinnings of the companies Freelander, know as the LR2 in the U.S. It will likely feature a transverse engine that will power the front wheels with a unique system powering the rear wheels.
The rear wheels will be powered by Land Rover first application of its e TERRAIN electric drive rear axle. The setup allows the rear wheels to be driven by battery only power up to an estimated speed of 20 mph.
Due to the unique drivetrain setup, the LRX may be able to move at slow speeds in two wheel drive mode without using the gasoline engine.
The setup would be well suited for a plug-in application, but no word has been released yet about the whether or not a plug will be part of the package.
The LRX’s debut date is significant as it marks the 40 year anniversary of the Range Rover lineup of vehicles.
