Last week, the Hyundai Ioniq name was confirmed for the Korean carmaker’s upcoming Prius-fighting five-door hatchback.
The Ioniq lineup will include hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric variants of the compact car built on the underpinnings of the new Elantra sedan.
And while the car’s official debut is still at least a few weeks away, we now have a better idea of what it will look like thanks to some teaser sketches.

As with last week’s announcement, these images came from the U.K. arm of Hyundai. At the time this article was published, Hyundai Motors America had not released any information.
The Hyundai-released exterior sketch shows a fairly standard five-door hatchback shape.
While not quite visible here, Hyundai says the Ioniq will incorporate the hexagonal grille used on its other recent models, but with special flaps intended to manage airflow more efficiently.

The interior sports a large central display screen, with two smaller screens flanking a single instrument dial in the gauge cluster behind the steering wheel. Hyundai says its designers also made use of “eco-friendly” materials for the cabin.
Perhaps more important than the exterior and interior styling will be the availability of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric powertrains in the same model.
This plan is somewhat similar to one from Honda, which will offer plug-in hybrid, and battery electric models based on the platform of the 2017 Clarity Fuel Cell mid-size sedan launching next year.

The Ioniq will debut in South Korea next month, followed by appearances at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and the New York Auto Show in April.
Previously known by the internal code ‘AE,’ the Ioniq line will be based on the platform of the next-generation Elantra to be introduced this coming year.
The hybrid version is expected to use a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, with an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and Hyundai’s own direct-shift gearbox.

That same engine and transmission are already offered in the 2016 Hyundai Tucson Eco–the most efficient version of the carmaker’s smallest crossover.
The plug-in hybrid Ioniq may use a version of that powertrain with a more powerful electric motor and larger battery pack, similar to the Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid.

Less is known about the battery-electric version, although it may use a new generation of the powertrain from the Kia Soul EV sold by Hyundai’s sister carmaker.
