Mitsubishi i MiEV Sport Air Geneva Auto Show 2009EVs, or electric vehicles, are becoming an increasingly hot topic in automotive news, especially as hybrids and other alternative fuel vehicles sales increase. They’re like the fountain of youth for the automotive consumer: they can drive for miles with zero emissions, at least not directly from the tailpipe. And it’s the intent of governments around the world to prod automakers into building more electric and hybrid vehicles, in the quest to abandon oil as a fuel.
So, with this increase in interest we are starting to see new concepts pop up in the news and gain traction. One of those is the Mitsubishi i MiEV (Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle). TheCarConnection.com first reported on Mitsubishi i MiEV concept back in 2007 and, you might remember, it went on an excursion to Monaco late last year to be driven by HRH Prince Albert II. While it didn’t get rave reviews, it did receive kind words and the commitment that the Prince would like to see more of this kind of zero-emissions vehicle in Monaco in the future.
He may soon get his wish, with yesterday’s newly announced partnership between Mitsubishi and Peugeot at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show.  According to the announcement, Mitsubishi, with the help of Peugeot, plans on selling the i MiEV in European countries by the end of 2010 or at latest the 1Q of 2011. The partnership should benefit both companies, as they both would like to have an EV solution available by their respective marques.
Currently, there is no name for the Peugeot version or any word on whether there will be any limitations on distribution or markets for either company or car version. What we do know is that the current version will fit into the micro car market, is capable of up to 100 all-electric miles on a single charge, and should be favorably priced. Of course, this is subject to change with the new partnership.
