Now that Fisker has managed to launch its 2012 Karma and start delivering cars to customers, the company is looking ahead toward expanding its model range.
Reports today in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf indicate that it will unveil the production version of its 2013 Fisker Surf ‘shooting brake’ at the Paris Motor Show this September.
This will be essentially the ready-to-build adaptation of the Surf Concept it showed last fall at the Frankfurt Motor Show, which alternates with the Frankfurt show in the global auto-show calendar.
That Surf Concept extended the Karma sedan’s roofline straight back to a more wagon-like back end, with a tailgate that lifted up to give access to a cargo bay that–while hardly Volvo-like in capacity–obviously held more than the minimal 6.9-cubic-foot trunk of the Karma sedan.

Like the Karma, the Surf remains a four-seat vehicle, with the lithium-ion battery pack located in the central tunnel running down the middle of the car.
It also leaves its electronics in a large hump behind the rear seats, meaning that while the Surf’s rear seats fold down, you won’t be bringing home any large pieces of antique furniture.
Think of the Surf more as the Fisker that simply lets you carry not only four people but their luggage as well.

We anticipate the Fisker Surf will be priced slightly above the 2012 Karma, which currently starts at $106,000.
The newspaper also says, by the way, that the Fisker Karma S or Sunset, a two-door convertible with a retractable hardtop, will go into production in March 2013. That model was first shown at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.
So the 2012 Fisker Karma range-extended electric car is at last a real vehicle. We’ve driven it, shot video behind the wheel, and we’ve formally reviewed it.
And despite its current challenges, Fisker is moving ahead with new models. Let’s hope they see the light of day.
