Who ever said green cars can’t be fun? You only have to look at the Tesla Roadster and upcoming hybrid and electric sports cars from Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW to see that there is a future for sports car fans beyond the internal combustion engine.
Porsche, too, is getting on the green car bandwagon, revealing earlier this year its stunning 918 Spyder concept car and almost immediately giving it the production green light. If you don’t recall, the Porsche 918 Spyder is a hybrid supercar featuring a 500 horsepower 3.4-liter V-8 and a total of three electric motors with a combined output of 218 horsepower. Together, the car’s final output rests at 718 horsepower but according to a new report we can expect even more power by the time the production version arrives, estimated to be around 2014.
At the recent 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, insiders revealed to Autocar that the displacement of the 918 Spyder’s internal combustion engine would most likely be increased for production, making the engine more powerful as well.
The car’s electric drive system, however, is expected to be left untouched, which means the 18 mile electric-only range should remain. Another important factor, the expected 78 mpg fuel economy, should also remain.
Of course, anything else could change between now and the Porsche 918 Spyder’s expected 2014 release date, so stay tuned.
