370Z Hybrid
We’ve been following Nissan’s plans to offer hybrid versions of Infiniti models for awhile now. If this excites you, the latest rumors out of Japan will make you downright giddy. According to 370Z.com Nissan plans to offer the same hybrid system in the 370Z by 2011.
The Z will incorporate a version of the 3.7 liter VQ V6 and an electric motor. The hybrid design will have two clutches to optimize efficiency: one between the gas engine and the electric motor, and one between the electric motor and the drive wheels. A plug-in mode will allow the most eco-conscious driver to increase fuel economy even more.
Energy for the electric motor will be stored by lithium-ion batteries created by Nissan and NEC. The 370Z Hybrid is expected to achieve an average of 35 miles per gallon in mixed conditions.
Will this car actually be built? Will it sacrifice performance for efficiency? Will it be able to maintain the affordable price point upon which its predecessors thrived? We can’t wait to find out.
