A few months back, after riding the Smart eBike, we concluded that it might actually be the best vehicle the company makes.
That makes the upcoming Smart electric scooter something worth waiting for–and to build it, the company is getting assistance from electric motorcycle experts Vectrix.
Smart’s eScooter concept debuted at the 2010 Paris Auto Show.
The clean styling, white and green paintwork and single-sided suspension arms on each wheel were eye-catching, but it was the electric drivetrain which really caught attention–particularly as German rival MINI unveiled its own electric scooter at the same show.
Smart has teased the concept at subsequent motor shows, but parent company Daimler reveals that Smart has struck a deal with Vectrix to develop the scooter.
“The smart scooter will be a true smart and we want to make it an icon of urban mobility – just like the smart fortwo,” explained Dr. Annette Winkler, head of Smart.
Set to go on sale in 2014, Smart says the new scooter will “offer unique features seen for the first time in this vehicle category”, and confirms the styling seen on the 2010 concept will be further refined before hitting the streets.
Winkler sees Vectrix as the ideal partner, having developed electric two-wheelers since 1996. “smart and Vectrix are both pioneers of electric mobility for the city,” she explained.
No specification details have yet been revealed. The original concept used a 6-horsepower electric motor, with a top speed of 30mph. Range was quoted at 62 miles.
