Quirky carmaker Subaru sees cleaner diesels and hybrids on the horizon. This week Ikuo Mori, president of Fuji Heavy Industries, (Subaru’s parent company) told Japanese reporters that Subaru is developing a cleaner diesel designed to meet 2011 global emissions standards and that he hopes to have a gas-electric hybrid on the market by then. According to Mori, Subaru will license the hybrid powertrain from their corporate cousin Toyota.
Subaru currently sells diesel powered cars in Europe and Japan, but they’ve never made it to the United States, in part because they wouldn’t meet our emissions standards and mostly because Americans don’t like the word “diesel.”
Subaru doesn’t have any hybrids on the market currently, but their all-electric vehicle called ‘Stella’ will go on sale to corporate and government customers this summer. Like most automakers, Subaru is taking a multifaceted approach to raising their Corporate Average Fuel Economy as governments all over the world raise the standards. If this puts me in a hybrid STI soon, I’m all for it.
