As the world’s bestselling electric car, the Nissan Leaf continues to be the first to pass many important milestones for the segment.
In just under four years on sale, it recently became the first electric car to pass 1 billion kilometers driven (about 620 million miles).

To thank Leaf owners, Nissan Europe released this short video–narrated by the Leaf itself.
The Leaf fleet has accumulated enough distance to circle the globe 24,953 times, Nissan says, and in covering that distance the Leaf has won many fans and done a lot to prove the viability of the modern electric car.
2015 Nissan LeafWhile doing all of that, the anthropomorphized electric car notes that it “never made a noise” about anything.
The 1 billion-km is part of an impressive 4 billion km logged by all of the electric vehicles made by Nissan and partner Renault.
The Renault-Nissan Alliance has sold over 200,000 electric cars, and claims a 58-percent market share in zero-emission vehicles.

Leaf plug-ins account for the majority of those sales, with the Nissan e-NV200 van and a handful of Renault electric models making up the rest of the total.
Of those sales, the Alliance says 66,500 were logged between January and early November of this year–a 20-percent increase over the same period last year.
Yet sales are behind the pace originally predicted by Carlos Ghosn, who acts as the CEO of both carmakers.
2015 Nissan LeafBy this time, Nissan Leaf capacity was to be 250,000 cars a year globally–including 150,000 in the U.S., and 50,000 each in Japan and the U.K.

U.S. Leaf sales are on track to total roughly 30,000 this year, underscoring the challenges electric cars still face.
Still, with dedicated owners out there racking up the mileage, it should only be a matter of time before the Leaf reaches another milestone.
