Toyota Motor Corp. hopes to achieve sales of 400,000 units worldwide of the new Prius by 2010. Toyota plans to accomplish this feat by selling the new Prius in 80 countries, nearly twice that of the outgoing model.
From its humble beginnings of only 36,000 units in its first model year, to more than 180,000 units in 2007, the Prius has shown its ability to overcome the slumping economy and continue to sell more units each and every year.
The new Prius has the added benefit of better gas mileage, a larger interior, and better overall driving characteristics that will likely increase its sales volume. However, Toyota’s numbers suggest that the new Prius will more than double its sale volume in only one year. With increased competition, low sales volume on new vehicles, and the incomplete factory in Blue Springs, MS which was slated to produce 150,000 units annually, Toyota’s figures may not be realistic.
