After months of avoiding bankruptcy like the plague, a new advertisement from General Motors tells us it’s not so bad after all. The “Reinvention” commercial (see the video below) pairs nationalistic imagery with a message of a company determined to sell better, more relevant cars.
“There was a time when eight different brands made sense. Not anymore. There was a time when our cost structure could compete worldwide. Not anymore,” says a hidden dramatic voice. (The ad doesn’t elaborate as to when eight badge engineered brands made sense. Pre-Toyota perhaps?)
The voice proceeds to describe the future of GM: “Fewer, stronger brands, fewer stronger models, greater efficiencies, better fuel economy, and new technologies. Leaner, greener, faster, smarter.”
Shots of hybrids, plug-ins, and fuel cell vehicles flash on the screen and the spot closes with a Chevy Volt speeding towards the camera.
Are you listening American taxpayer? GM says they’re hellbent on emerging from bankruptcy stronger than ever before and since you own a good chunk of this former automotive icon, you’re responsible for holding them to it. Otherwise, the cynicism that spawned the Reinvention Spoof ad (see the second video below) will kill the auto giant for good.
