The BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car has to be one of the most anticipated new vehicles of the next few years, for both green buyers and gearheads alike.
It’s quick, but for the moment at least, you need a Tesla Model S if you want a speedy electric vehicle.
So what if you put both together on the same piece of road? That’s exactly what this video from German Facebook page ElectroDriver does, albeit seemingly unplanned.
The giveaway is that the BMW i8 is still in the familiar blue and white camouflage BMW uses for testing new models.
As such, you can’t see all the i8’s striking details, but it’s clear the car is relatively petite next to the heavyweight Model S, most obvious when the Tesla blasts past it on a section of two-lane road.
We get to see the BMW’s unusual side wings below the camouflage, and once the Tesla is ahead, the wide BMW “kidney” grille and compact proportions become apparent.
The two are very different cars, of course. Where the Model S seats five–or seven, with the extra rear seats–has a 265-mile EPA range and reaches 60 mph in under five seconds, the BMW has different goals.
What we know about the i8 is that it’s a two-seater, plug-in hybrid sports car using both electric propulsion and power from a turbocharged, 1.5-liter 3-cylinder gasoline engine.
The most recent details suggest it weighs in at just over 3,260 pounds, and peak torque is around 400 lbs-ft–0-62 mph should take about 4.6 seconds. All-electric range is around 20 miles, and BMW is claiming combined economy of around 80 mpg–a figure deduced from some electric running, we presume.
But once the BMW hits the streets for real next Spring, we’re looking forward to seeing a real race between some of the more potent electric vehicles.
Not the most relevant real-world test perhaps, but one of the most exciting…
